With a last despairing chug the spring-cleaning machine was finished.

‘Thank goodness for that,’ said everyone, mopping their foreheads with one another’s handkerchiefs which they’d taken from one another’s pockets by mistake because they were so crowded up.

They got themselves sorted out at last and went outside while Mrs Flittersnoop made cups of tea. Then everyone went home, feeling that a good, if exciting, time had been had by all.

Mrs Flittersnoop had to do all the spring cleaning over again because of the mess the machine had brought in. But the Professor let her have her sister Aggie’s two aunties in who were both very good at cleaning, so it didn’t take so long.
